Cancer is the Moon's own sign of Motherhood. Spencer John says, "To get a feeling for the qualities of Cancer, think about how a mother relates to her infant child: nurturing, care-taking, protective, sensitive, anxious, patient." And yet one of the flaws of Cancer is that all these feelings are directed almost completely towards someone else. It is easy to forget to nurture yourself, which can lead to a terrible and frustrating Catch 22. When you don't get nurtured, you wear yourself out and then how can you effectively take care of anyone else? This image sets the tone for this Lunation of Adjustment and Balance.

A note on how to read the following sections (The Path, Challenges & Opportunities, and The Gifts). Astrological information is written in this color. Unless you are an astrologer, you may ignore these subtitles. They are there for my own research and for any astrologer who may want to verify my work or understand how I arrived at the interpretations that follow them.
Astrologers may click here for a brief commentary on the dwads, and how I use them.
The interpretations themselves are written in black, my goal being to achieve an explanation in plain English of what is "written in the stars" in the chart of the New Moon. Sometimes I achieve this goal better than others. If you have questions, please ask them in the comments section that follows at the bottom of the page.

What begins with the new moon swells to the full.
Here are some things to consider when traveling this Moon's Journey:

_The Path_

  • The Lunation occurs on a Moon Path
This lends spiritual significance that adds the qualities and nuances of the Moon─sometimes subtly, sometimes less so─to everything that follows. Rather than list those qualities here, I have taken them into consideration in the following descriptions.

_Challenges & Opportunities_

  • Saturn (sagittarius dwad aries 5th) square Neptune (pisces dwad cancer 5th)
There is conflict between a need for structure in which to explore a goal-oriented future with an impulse to do something about it ─and─ the need to dream, fantasize, and let things take their natural course. Between a need to manage and control, and an easy-going desire to flow. On the one hand there is a need to take responsibility, organize, educate, and direct ─and─ on the other hand, just relax, listen to music, enjoy a film, or just plain play! This conflict will show up where loved ones are involved, or children, or even your own inner child. It is no small matter. This conflict carries a lot of energy and can lead to a seesaw that engenders anger, and then an immediate need to mother and forgive whoever you were angry with, even and especially if it is yourself, or yourself reflected in someone you love.

  • Lunation (cancer dwad scorpio 5th) trine Neptune (pisces dwad cancer 5th)
This aspect is more of a bounty than a problem, though it can add to the challenge above by overbalancing the recreation-fun side of the equation and luring us away from the practical. Here we gain insight, feel creative, intuitive and artistic. This grants us warmth and gentleness and sensitivity to other people's feelings. This should work out well especially in intimate relationships.

  • Mars (scorpio dwad libra 10th) inconjunct Uranus (aries dwad capricorn 10th)
This is the first of three calls for adjustment by this Lunation. An adjustment is like a seesaw where one part of the board is shorter than the other. It feels impossible to balance two things, but necessary to do so anyway. This first call for adjustment looks something like this: whenever you feel an almost sexual need to get something accomplished─and you will feel it─before you can actually accomplish much, you'll find yourself stubbornly and selfishly rejecting or at least disrupting that very need and call to action. But this adjustment twister won't sit still, either. When you are on the other side, rebelling against something you need to do, a feeling of needing to do it all the more overwhelms you.

  • Jupiter (virgo dwad aries 8th) trine Pluto (capricorn dwad aries 7th)
Here is a second bounty hidden between the adjustments of this Moon. We will have an enthusiastic, discriminating optimism that urges action, bonding, merging, and transformation. We have all it takes to dedicate ourselves to goals and long term accomplishment. It's a good energy for partnership, friendship, marriage, and business.

  • Mercury (cancer dwad libra 4th) inconjunct Saturn (sagittarius dwad aries 5th)
This is the second call for adjustment from this Moon. It concerns the sphere of action and attention in which we spend our time and energy. There is a strong pull on our thoughts and attention to focus on family and relationships close to home. And yet when too many of our decisions revolve around this, that pull towards a goal-oriented future that stretches out into the world (work, career, etc.) interferes. And vice versa: too much attention on the world, our goals, and the future conflicts with our stay-at-home instincts. It is difficult to balance these two spheres of life as the demands on our time and attention on the one side (home or the world) causes stress and demands adjustment from the other (the world or home).

  • Lunation (cancer dwad scorpio 5th) inconjunct Saturn (sagittarius dwad aries 5th)
This is the third and final call for adjustment. It is like an echo of the other two, only this one focuses more on the emotional aspect of the conflicts. Whereas the 2nd one described above is about thought and decision processes, this one is more about the emotional picture, which often isn't logical at all. We feel obligated to focus on relationships and intimacy (at home). Yet this emotional obligation causes adjustment conflict with the other things we "should be" doing (out there, in those other matters we feel called to do). And again, nastily, vice versa.

_The Gifts_

Wherever there is conflict and challenge in life, we are also given gifts that help us through them. We find the gifts in two places: from within, where our greatest creativity is located, and from the world─Gaia, the Mother─where we may be receptive to what we can cultivate, to orient ourselves to the mundane.

Interestingly enough, the two things most in conflict this month share something very important in common to guide us through it all.

  • Dwad Sign and House of Sun and Moon (cancer dwad scorpio 5th)
Me─Our Greatest Creativity extends from our sensitivity, patience and intuition. It flows from our ability to nurture and take care of our home environment and the people we love most. (If you are wise, you are going to be one of those people!) Instinct is a big part of this. We have an almost psychic ability to penetrate to the essence of whatever we focus upon. And once that essence is known, deep and meaningful connections can be made.

  • Dwad Sign and House of Earth (capricorn dwad taurus 5th)
The World─Our Greatest Receptivity comes from a natural quality contained in time itself this month. It is easy to do what is required in order to accomplish things that bring success. Discipline doesn't feel like discipline in any negative sense. It feels like closure and boundaries we work inside of with gratitude and ease. Why? Because we value what we are doing and the direction in which we are headed.

What is the commonality between the two things most in conflict this lunar month─home and the world? It is the Inner Child, the part of us that most understands how to have fun! Whatever else you may call the things to come this month, it's almost a guarantee it will be dramatic. The Moon will have her way with us. It's going to be an emotional ride. But the Inner Child knows what it wants to do to be entertained, to express itself romantically, creatively, and with larger than life personal power. What do you know about children? They are always focused on right now, this moment, like there is no tomorrow.

So when the world pulls at you from one direction and home from the other, where is the most drama, right now, in this very moment? What sounds to you─to your Inner Child─like the most fun and entertaining thing to do? Whatever it is, do it with all your heart.

It may seem like if you give your Inner Child full reign for a month, all he or she will want to do is play and no work will get done at all. I have found this isn't true. A healthy child will work with all his or her heart with everything done, and make very little, if any, distinguishing between "work" and "play." Ponder this. And whatever you choose to do, work and play with childlike abandon, as if there is no tomorrow. Because of the seesaw effect of adjustment and balance from this Lunation, you'll likely do something different tomorrow from what you do today. And that's okay.

You will probably NOT find balance in any one day this month. Balance will negotiate itself through the days as you make creative and emotionally intelligent choices about what you are doing one day at a time.

A couple ways you might look at this Lunation

  1. You might want to consider what it would mean to leave yourself behind─the self you know so well─in order to accept a new incarnation into the sign of Cancer. What would it be like to be reborn with this New Moon, seeing everything in your life through new filters from the chart you were born with and the personality you have developed through the years. Elisha calls this the principle of multiple incarnations within a single lifetime. Stick with me and Elisha for a year of such Journeys and you will experience what it means to be born into every sign of the Zodiac.

  2. You might wish to study The Lunation Guide and consider that possibly certain lessons are given to us on a planetary level with each New Moon. By following the principles Dane Rudhyar outlined in his classic work The Lunation Cycle , discover what those lessons are. Don't miss the opportunity for spiritual growth that every lunation brings!

Whichever way you choose to experience it, I hope you will leave comments below
sharing your Journey with the Moon through this Cancer Lunation cycle.
